I'm off!

I'm off! But flights cancelled so they had me spend the night in Miami. I'll get there on Tues.

Ted

I'll write more here. I got started with Phase 2 steelband right away. They got me a pan and had me hang it up and start learning the tune. The band is VERY organized this year. They want to win in a big way. Practice is very on-task; there's no foolin around, no "limin'" (thats as in "to lime, to hang around and talk"). The tune is sweet, and not too hard. There are spots that I'll need to work abit.
The big bands will not have a preliminary competition. There are only 18 bands entering this year so why spend the money to run an event and pay judges and so on to eliminate 2 bands. The Semi-finals go with 16 bands.

Highlandes is trying to be ready for small band Prelims on Mon. They're not getting enough players and there are a whole lot of other difficulties so we're not sure they'll be able to come out. This is the band that, though it's an old band, been around for a long time, one of the origional steelbands, Charlie Pinder has been trying to revive it. This is a band for the local kids in the neighborhod of Lavantille.

More later.

Any questions???!!!

2006 Phase II Steelband

These pics are from February, 2006.

Here is the entrance to the Phase II panyard. It's much busier at night.

All the low pans, called the background, are kept out on the racks. The high pans, called the frontline, are kept in a container, like the cargo containers on ships. Or some people bring their own and will take them with them when they leave.

This blog

This blog is for friends and students interested in Trinidad, steelband music, Panorama, Carnival, and what I'm actually doing here. I'll try and post pictures, audio and even video of my travels here. People can ask questions or post comments. We'll try and make it interesting for everyone.

First off, I've never used a blog before so there will be a lot of technical learning going on. Any assistance is welcome.

More later. I have to see how this worked.
